Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make an appointment for a consultation?

First you should ask your primary care doctor for a referral if needed by your insurance company. Then all you need to do is call Kathy at 970.267.2661 or send us an e-mail. If you do not have a primary care doctor or don't need a referral, you may call us directly to schedule a consultation.

Will my insurance cover my procedure?

Most insurance carriers, including Medicare, will cover the EVLTŪ procedure if it has been determined to be medically necessary, based on the failure of other conservative therapy such as compression, leg elevation, weight loss, etc.

Doesn't my body need the veins that are treated?

Varicose veins are superficial veins, meaning they are close to the skin. Faulty valves in these veins actually interfere with the normal return of blood. Closing or removing abnormal superficial improves venous circulation as the body diverts blood to normal veins with functioning valves. The resulting improvement in venous circulation significantly relieves symptoms and improves appearance.

What are the advantages of the treatments provided at The Vein and Laser Center of Northern Colorado over surgery?

Surgery, called "ligation and stripping" is the traditional treatment for varicose veins. It can be very painful and often has a long recovery time. Vein-stripping surgery is performed in a hospital, involves general anesthesia, leaves a scar, and has a fairly high recurrence rate (10 to 25 percent on average).

Is it true that the laser causes more pain and bruising than other treatments, such as radio-frequency?

This is not an accurate statement and should not influence your decision to seek laser treatment. Manageable discomfort and minimal bruising is always a possibility with any venous procedure, especially when it involves the removal of the visual varicose veins. Patients report that over-the-counter pain relievers, if at all needed, were sufficient in treating their discomfort.

How long will my recovery time be?

Patients are encouraged to be up on their feet and walking immediately after treatment and can resume normal activities after a day or two. You may be given elastic support stockings to wear for up to two weeks after your procedure.

Can varicose veins be prevented?

Underlying conditions such as heredity, age, and gender usually make preventing all varicose veins impossible, but there are things you can do to help relieve the discomfort from existing varicose veins and minimize the formation of new ones:

Exercise regularly to improve leg strength and circulation. Walking is ideal.
Avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time. Take short walks every 30 minutes if you can, and elevate your legs if possible.
Control your weight to avoid placing increased pressure on leg circulation.
Avoid clothing that limits the use of the calf muscles, such as high heels, or restricts blood flow in the groin or calf.
