Non-Surgical Laser Treatment (EVLT®)
The Vein and Laser Center of Northern Colorado is pleased to offer a non-surgical Endovenous Laser Treatment, EVLT®, to treat varicose veins.
EVLT, an office-based procedure, can be completed in less than an hour and requires only a local anesthetic. It offers immediate relief of pain and other symptoms associated with varicose veins. Patients are up and walking immediately and resuming normal activities within a day or two.

| During the EVLT procedure, doctors use a duplex ultrasound, which combines Doppler and conventional ultrasound, to see the structure of your blood vessels and map out the problem veins.
A local anesthetic is applied along the length of each vein, then a sheath, followed by a fine, flexible laser fiber, is inserted through a tiny entry point, which is usually near the knee. Ultrasound is used to guide the laser fiber through the vein, where energy from the laser seals the faulty vein. Blood is rerouted through other veins within the leg and the treated vein eventually becomes a thin fibrous band which is ultimately absorbed by the body. |
With EVLT, there is:
No hospitalization
Minimal or no scarring because there is no need for sutures
A lower risk for complications compared to other procedures
Minimal pain
A 98% initial success rate
High patient satisfaction

Sclerotherapy Return to top
Sclerotherapy is a common treatment for spider veins and small to medium-sized varicose veins. The procedure is performed at The Vein and Laser Center and requires no anesthesia. The doctor injects the veins with a chemical that scars the inside of the veins, causing the veins to close and allowing the blood to reroute to other healthier veins. As the veins close, they become visually undetectable.
While some veins may need to be injected more than once, sclerotherapy is an effective procedure, with most patients seeing a 50 to 90 percent improvement.
Are there any side effects?
Possible side effects include:
Temporary stinging or painful cramps, red raised patches of skin,
small skin sores, or bruises at the injection site
Spots, brown lines, or groups of fine red blood vessels around the treated vein that usually disappear
Rarely, skin breakdown can occur

Vein Removal (Micro-Phlebectomy) Return to top
For some cases, the direct removal of smaller problem veins is an effective treatment, either alone or following a minimally invasive procedure. After using a local anesthetic, the doctor makes multiple small incisions in the leg through which the veins are removed. This is an out-patient procedure and patients are encouraged to return to normal activity as soon as possible.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are unusual from this procedure, but may include infection, bleeding, or skin pigmentation.
