3 Varicose Veins Treatments To Consider

Varicose veins are enlarged, gnarled, bulging veins that are painful because they cause blood to not flow effectively. They most often appear on legs and feet, but they can be on other parts of your body as well. When you have varicose veins, you can often feel self-conscious of your legs and be in a lot of pain, so varicose veins treatment becomes necessary. At The Vein and Laser Center of Northern Colorado, we have experience with all sorts of varicose veins treatments.

There are many aspects to consider when you’re contemplating how to get rid of varicose veins, but we’re here to help. All of our vein doctors have the experience and knowhow you want when it comes to varicose vein removal. EVLT: Endovenous Laser Treatment

This laser treatment for varicose veins isn’t as scary as it sounds; sure, lasers are used — but the procedure is minimally invasive and doesn’t even affect the surrounding areas.

  1. Your vein doctor inserts a thin fiber into the damaged vein. This fiber emits a highly concentrated beam of light
  2. Your vein doctor pulls the fiber back through the vein as it delivers this light and energy.
  3. Your tissue reacts to the light. Your tissue causes your vein to close and seal shut.

Less than 5 percent of your body’s blood flow is in these superficial veins, so you don’t need to worry about a disruption in blood flow; your body will automatically route the blood to healthy veins instead.

When your vein doctor uses this laser for varicose veins, you’ll be up and walking immediately after the procedure and can go back to your normal routine. No general anesthesia is used, but a local anesthetic is used to numb the area directly where the physician is working.

Microphlebectomy (Ambulatory Phlebectomy)

This varicose vein surgery is the same as an ambulatory phlebectomy. Just like an EVLT, it is minimally invasive and highly effective. This varicose veins treatment is ideal for removing large surface varicose veins.

  1. A local anesthetic fluid is injected into the area of your varicose vein clusters.
  2. Your vein doctor punctures the skin next to the varicose vein with a small scalpel or needle.
  3. Next, your vein doctor inserts a small hook into the hole, grasps your vein, and removes it.

The area will need to be covered with a compression bandage or compression stockings, but no stitches are required, scars are difficult to see at best, and you’re able to walk immediately afterward.

Microphlebectomy often follows EVLT to remove any large surface veins that may be left over from that procedure.

Foam Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an effective varicose veins treatment that has been used since the 1930s. Patients are encouraged to refrain from smoking and taking aspirin for several days preceding their sclerotherapy procedure.

  1. Your vein doctor injects a solution (resembling foam) into the larger varicose vein.
  2. This solution — a sclerosing agent — collapses the vein by destroying its inner walls.
  3. These walls will then stick together and close, your body will form scar tissue, and it will become less visible over time.

This varicose veins treatment could take up to several hours, but could take less time during future visits. Only 10-20 injections can be done per session, so how long it will take is largely determined by how many varicose veins you need treated. After all, this option is a process and not a one-time treatment.

After each of your foam sclerotherapy treatment sessions, the injection sites are covered and the entire area is wrapped in an elastic bandage for two to three days. This will prevent swelling and minimize bruising. You should also elevate your legs for two to four hours after your procedure, and your vein doctor may recommend medical compression socks.
