If you have those bulging veins on your legs that don’t seem to be going anywhere, then you may have looked into varicose vein treatments recently. However, there are so many rumors and myths about varicose veins out there that you may have stopped the search for a “vein center near me” and instead resigned to a life with twisting blue cords going up your legs.
Here at The Vein and Laser Center of Northern Colorado, we regularly see patients who have all sorts of preconceived notions about varicose vein treatments and varicose veins in general. In today’s blog, we’re going to dispel some of the myths we hear most often. If you’re in Fort Collins or any other part of northern Colorado, then reach out to us today! We offer an hour-long consultation with a vein doctor to prospective clients, along with a free 15-minute screening.
1. Crossing Your Legs Causes Varicose Veins
If you’re a woman, you’ve probably heard it over and over again: “Don’t cross your legs! You’ll get varicose veins!”
As well-intentioned as those people may be, crossing your legs is certainly not the cause of varicose veins. Obesity, pregnancy, age, gender, and inactivity are all large contributors to those infamous bulging veins.
2. Running Causes Varicose Veins
For all you runners out there, keep on keepin’ on. Any form of exercises, running included, is generally a good thing for varicose vein prevention. If you’re prone to varicose veins, then simply wear compression clothing during your run and elevate your legs afterward. This should help prevent blood from pooling in your lower legs while running.
3. Only Women Get Varicose Veins
We hear this myth all the time. While more women are affected by varicose veins than men, that definitely doesn’t mean men are excluded from getting varicose veins. About 25 percent of adult women will have visible varicose veins — compared to about 10 to 15 percent of adult men. The pain, swelling, heaviness, and more will affect people of both genders.
4. Varicose Veins Are Just Part Of Aging
Sure, people are more likely to get or worsen varicose veins as they age; however, not all people will get varicose veins as they age. Genetics is the main cause of varicose veins, meaning it doesn’t matter how old or young you may be.
5. Varicose Vein Treatments Are Just For Improving Looks
A lot of people postpone varicose vein treatments because they think it’s just a cosmetic issue. In that time, though, they allow the bulging veins to worsen. As they worsen, the veins become more extensive to treat later on, and they’ll be much more painful. At our vein clinic, our vein doctors actually primarily see patients who are looking for varicose veins pain relief — not just more attractive legs.
For a varicose veins treatment in northern Colorado, you can count on us. We offer varicose vein surgeries that are effective and minimally invasive. Contact The Vein and Laser Center of Northern Colorado today for a free 15-minute screening.
